What are the pros and cons?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"28648247","body":"I think in order to help alleviate budget problems, open source programs are a great idea.  A lot of school districts these days are facing budget cuts and since a lot of money goes towards funding for software, it would cut out a great portion of spending for the school districts if they can use similar programs for free.  It is also helpful in school districts where many students cannot afford this kind of software for their personal computers, because they will know how to use and access the open source applications.  Many of these applications can allow teachers to view what students are working on, in order to help them along before they actually hand in an assignment.  One con to the open source programs is, as we have seen in class, they are not as extensive as the commercial applications.  If students are only exposed to the open source applications, they may not be fully knowledgeable on how to use the commercial applications to their full extent once they enter college or the workforce.
