Many of the courses students take in high school do not use technology at all. Personally, I would go through most days in high school without even using technology. Sometimes my teachers would use technology for notes, but we would write them down with regular pens and paper. I think one of the main problems is that many teachers are not allowing students to use technology during class, which keeps them from becoming accustomed to using technology on a regular basis. Also, there is very little requirement for classes that teach students how to use technology. As we once discussed in class, most of these technology-based classes were offered only as electives. If the global economy is now requiring that students be very proficient in computer programs, we really need to start pushing up the requirements on courses that teach this.

\nOne reason that I do think that this alarm is an overreaction, though, is that, as stated, a main reason why other countries are out-competing the US for jobs is because people in these countries are willing to work for less money than Americans. Although this is something that cannot be helped, it is definitely a huge reason why these jobs are so often going to people in other countries. If we want to make sure that Americans are getting jobs, maybe as a country we have to work to really decrease the amount of outsourcing that has been happening.","dateCreated":"1286755382","smartDate":"Oct 10, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"cmeaney26","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cmeaney26","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"30906327","body":"I think that it is a slight overreaction because though education hasn't had a positive role in terms of students' preparation for web 2.0, I think that they themselves have dabbled in this world long enough to be experienced professionals. Web 2.0 chiefly consists of the interactive side of the internet: facebook, youtube, twitter, myspace, livejournal, blogger, etc. Who has been using these since they've been put up? -students! So they are not exactly under-prepared in terms of ability to use the product; they are perhaps under-prepared in terms of appropriate judgment in particular contexts. This is one area where education can have an active, positive role.","dateCreated":"1291096802","smartDate":"Nov 29, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"skaspid","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/skaspid","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"31221895","body":"I agree with Dan. I think that kids aren't necessarily up to date on all of the different educational tools, but they are computer and technology savvy for the most part. Students have definitely used a lot of the programs that Web 2.0 consists of-- like wikis, blogs, etc. That means that teachers will just have to teach students how to use these programs and softwares in the education realm. I think that sometime in the future, or at least I hope, we can expect to see many more computers in the classroom, and much more technology being put to use in everyday lessons.","dateCreated":"1291605351","smartDate":"Dec 5, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"RubyDuell","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/RubyDuell","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1355802925\/RubyDuell-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
